I know that every year the MWC (Mobile World Congress) evokes a lot of emotion. Unfortunately, sometimes journalists visiting such events sometimes forget to think critically about the presented innovations. Lack of vigilance has been used this time by the Chinese manufacturer of smartphones, the ZTE company. Their phone named ZTE Gigabit Phone has been hailed yesterday the first smartphone 5G. Unfortunately, this is not the true.

Yet at least one year we will not see any (even a prototype) devices that work with the next generation mobile networks, i.e. 5G. Both Qualcomm and Intel are still working on their first 5G modems. In fact, I am grateful marketers from ZTE, because they showed that the CPU and RAM are not the most important components of our smartphones. We, as editors of Speed ‚Äč‚ÄčTest, pay special attention to the wireless connection modules, because they define the speed of the mobile Internet. Therefore, we are extremely excited that ZTE Gigabit Phone uses all currently known features of LTE-Advanced.

ZTE Gigabit Phone uses 4×4 MIMO, 256 QAM modulation and carrier aggregation, so it achieves speed close to 1 Gbps.

This is not a fake. The smartphone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, which has X16 LTE modem. We all thought, that Samsung has a “monopoly” on the first delivery of Snapdragon 835, which will be used in Galaxy S8/S8 +. However, ZTE has decided to use the MWC 2017 and show what new Qualcomm chipset can achieve. It is true that we do not know exactly how ZTE Gigabit phone looks, because this prototype was closed in case camouflage covers buttons and cameras. Watch this carefully, you will notice that smartphones are connected to the LTE base station emulators using RF cables. This is how phone manufacturers test wireless modems into their devices.
