The media has already reported that the Chinese smartphone maker outpaced Apple and Samsung by making the first smartphone with a fingerprint reader hidden under the screen. We all hope that this feature will be seen in the new iPhone 8, but Apple may not be ready yet to introduce this innovation. As far as Vivo is concerned, they actually work with this technology, but it is not yet ready for deployment in a commercial device.
Currently, MWC (Mobile World Congress) is taking place in Shanghai, where the latest innovations of the mobile world are being presented. It is true that every year all eyes are returned to Barcelona, but we should not forget about MWC in China. Vivo is quite popular among Chinese with 17% of smartphone sales in the country. It is also the sister company of Oppo, from which also comes OnePlus. So what is the source of the rumours of a breakthrough smartphone from Vivo? All this is due to the promotional video that appeared in social media.
Vivo uses the Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors technology, which is the successor to the Snapdragon Sense ID.
Smartphones that do not have a classic fingerprint reader appear on the market for some time now. The Sense ID technology is based on the use of ultrasonic sensors that can be placed under a thin coating to protect the reader from damage. They are also characterized by higher resolution (i.e. better security level) and they can handle easily with wet and dirty fingers. However, you still need to use the home button. That’s why the Apple patent, which suggested hiding a fingerprint reader under the iPhone 8 screen, was a lot of excitement.
The new solution allows the ultrasound to penetrate the display or housing.
This is a very innovative solution because it allows manufactures to design frameless smartphones without putting a fingerprint reader on the back of the case. This is how Samsung decided to take on the Galaxy S8. The first chipsets that support the new Fingerprint Sensors technology will be the Snapdragon 660 and 630. Later, the Snapdragon 836 will also be included. The Vivo has presented two modified versions of the VIVO XPlay 6 at the MWC. One of them has fingerprint reader under the screen and the other at the back under the metal case. This solution works well, but the producer has yet to work on the time of smartphone unlocking. But it is always a beginning. It is expected that the first smartphones with ultrasound fingerprints hidden under the screen will appear on the market in the fourth quarter of this year. Will Apple be able to overtake its competitors? We should find out about this in a few months.
