Many people were surprised that Microsoft decided to abandon the Edge’s web browser engine and switch to Chromium. One of the former Redmond giant interns publicized the whole thing, thinking that this decision was dictated by unfair Google practices, which sabotaged the performance of other browsers when playing YouTube videos. Google’s employees deny these allegations.
Microsoft’s internet browsers do not have a good opinion among web application developers and webmasters. Internet Explorer was once the most popular internet browser. However, it had huge problems with displaying standards-compliant pages. Therefore, web application designers were forced to constantly adapt their works to the Microsoft browser. Unfortunately, solutions written for Internet Explorer or Edge browsers often do not work in Firefox or Chrome or Opera. Currently, Microsoft’s browsers are used only by less than 10% of Internet users. However, the most popular browser is Chrome. Does this mean that the team working on Edge had to constantly adapt to the solutions dictated by Google? This is what Joshua Bakita, a former Microsoft engineer working on EdgeHTML, says.
Google says it did not sabotage other browsers
Joshua Bakita accused Google of including code snippets in the YouTube code that degraded the performance of other browsers. As an example, he gave an empty div tag that caused hardware acceleration problems in EdgeHTML. This change meant that Edge stopped wining over Chrome in the battery life test. It was hardware acceleration that made Windows 10 with the Edge browser download less power than using Google Chrome. Microsoft’s employees had constant problems adjusting to changes introduced by Google. That’s why the giant from Redmond has decided to change with EdgeHTML on Chromium.
The YouTube spokesperson issued a statement in which he informed about the lack of any code affecting the operation of particular browsers. In addition, YouTube works with other web browser providers using the Web Platform Tests project.
